Friday Morning Music – Songs For Winter

Every Friday morning, we kick your day off with a series of videos loosely gathered around a theme. This week, songs that make us thankful the dark days of winter are coming to a close.

Winter is my least favorite time. Darkness lingers, when you wake and when you  go home, you hide away inside heavy coats, and the cold, like a despised lover, is forever needling and snapping and attacking. In that spirit, I cheer as the sun grows each day, stronger and longer, and anticipate the day I put the scarves and gloves away for one more year.

Mumford and Sons – Winter Winds

I’ve well documented my love for The Avett Brothers. Mumford and Sons delighfully reminds me of them, if you took away the Southern twang and added a bit more artfulness to the songwriting. Their lyrics perfectly capture doubt that plagues the winter insomniac when the dark rolls out in front of you unending and warmth is no more than nostalgia.

As the winter winds litter London with lonely hearts, oh the warmth in your eyes swept me into your arms. Was it love or fear of the cold that led us through the night?

The official video’s music is lush and full, but playback is restricted by Sony.

Side note, check out this totally sweet reinterpreted album cover by Sarah Pauls.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Also restricted on Youtube. Thanks, record companies. God forbid anyone actually see your product and consider purchasing it.
